5 out of 5 stars great product   January 1, 2009

we've just purchased another "cat mate c50" after having the same product for 17 years. we got our first one after our first cat was diagnosed with feline diabetes and needed regularly spaced, specific amounts of food. it worked flawlessly. between the "cat mate" feedings and the medical help, the cat lived another 12 years.

when we got out current cat five years ago, we continued to use the "cat mate" hoping the feeding pattern would keep her on the healthy side of life. only recently has age caught up with the unit, thus the purchase of a new one.

I would highly recommend the unit, though taping in the battery is a must (as another reviewer had mentioned) and I would only recommend using it with dry food.

2 out of 5 stars Was okay for about a year, but...   June 2, 2008

We purchased this automatic feeder a little more than a year ago to provide precise portion control for our two cats and help them lose weight, and also so they would stop bothering me for food all day (I work from home). It took a long time to get the knack of this device; I had to write down the steps on a post-it and refer to that for about a week before I got the hang of setting it up every day. Needless to say, if we went away for more than a day, we didn't even bother to try to explain it to our pet sitter, and instead have her come 2x per day, which defeats part of the purpose of having the device. Finally, after about a year, we noticed that one of our cats had gotten quite svelte, but the other had not. After some observation we realized that the larger cat had figured out how to defeat the device and was eating portions that were supposed to be for later in the day. I'm still not sure how he did it, but I've finally given up and am looking for an alternative feeder.

3 out of 5 stars Lasted a long time but was only fully operational for a year   April 19, 2008

I had this feeder for 10 years before it fell to the floor and shattered. The spring load broke first, within the first year. I had to reset the unit manually (move the ring and red rigger by hand). I had battery issues throughout the life of the unit but I found if I tested the unit several days before going away, I could make sure it worked. By year 4, the unit would skip days, for example, the cat never got to eat meal 2 because the door moved past 2 to meal 3. Occasionally, other days would skip. It got the the point that I had to ask someone to check on the unit every 3 days to make sure the cat was fed. It was impossible to have total comfort that my sweet cat was okay.

I only fed female cats using this device (the largest cat was 12 lbs). I read in the other reviews about the cats pushing open the next day. While my cats did this occasionally, it didn't happen every time I used it. I think a 16 pound cat or larger would make this device a play thing.

Now that my unit is broken, I am trying a different brand. If that does work, I will come back to this unit.

4 out of 5 stars A handy, useful product   April 12, 2008

We've been using the Cat Mate for over a year and so far it has performed flawlessly. Best of all, our Siamese cat (and you know how finicky cats are) adjusted to using it right away.

We use it only when we are going to be away for 24 hours or less (our cat likes to be fed about every 8 hours). I normally place canned food in the first two trays (the ice packs keep it fresh for at least 16 hours) then, if needed, I place dry food in the remaining trays.

We haven't had any of the problems others have cited (e.g., dislodged battery, failure of lid to rotate/open etc.). I admit I was skeptical at first, but I've been very pleased at how well this has worked.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, but you have to know your cat. If a cat is particularly rough or aggressive maybe it would be easy to dislodge the batter, but so far we haven't had that problem.

I also am careful to be sure the battery is fresh. This is probably over kill, but I always put in a fresh battery each time I use this product.

The bottom line is that for us it has worked beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars We have two C50s and they work for our two cats   August 12, 2007

We have one voracious cat and another who is a grazer. We got 2 C50s so that when we were away, the grazer would have two chances if he cared to eat to get to a feeder. I admit, a smart and forceful cat could cause the battery to be knocked out from the bottom, flip up the protective cover on the timer and release future scheduled meals. As for our experience, the battery I think was knocked out only once and hasn't ever since we've had them since 2000. Our cats have not however flipped up the timer cover yet. It works for us to cover long weekend trips of up to 5 days.
