Product Description Combining two popular titles in one value-priced edition, Before and After Getting Your Puppy is a simple, practical guide for anyone bringing a new puppy into the home. In clear steps, with helpful photos and easy-to-follow training deadlines, Dr. Ian Dunbar, who pioneered puppy classes and a loving style of dog training in the 1970s, presents a structured yet playful and humorous plan for raising a wonderful dog. The guide is based on six developmental deadlines: completing owner education and preparation, assessing a puppy's prior socialization and education, teaching errorless house-training and chewtoy-training, completing a socialization program of meeting strange dogs and people, learning bite inhibition, and continuing a program of ongoing training. In the first half of the book, Dr. Dunbar focuses on what the owner needs to know to select a great puppy. In the second half, he presents the crucial lessons the puppy must be taught during its impressionable early development - using a kind, positive approach that, over time, has been proven the most effective.

Best Method for Housetraining January 6, 2009 Merro M. (Frederick, Maryland) I've read my list of dog-training books before brining home our puppy, and after she arrived, Ian Dunbar's Before&After is the absolute bible for housetraining. I've learned not to stray from the guidelines, and provide the routine and rules that Dunbar suggests, and our puppy needs. Our maltese puppy understood "Potty" from day 3, and by the end of the first week, would do her business on command, even the least bit (a drop when she didn't need to) when we went out regularly. Definitely a must-read, must-follow.
Essential Reading For All New Puppy Owners December 11, 2008 Chris (San Jose, CA) Before and After Getting Your Puppy is a fantastic read. If only all new puppy owners could just get a hold of this book, read it and implement the strategies. I'm sure this would drastically reduce the amount of dog bites, dumped puppies and abused dogs - the information is that good. Dr, Ian Dunbar is the leading dog training/care authority in the world - wouldn't it be great if all dog breeders could hand this book out to new owners every time they sold a puppy? Highly recommended for any dog owner - whether you have a new puppy or even an older dog.
Excellent October 16, 2008 dogluver (Seattle) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This a great book and should be required reading for all new dog owners. Dr. Dunbar has a proven track record and the science to back up the methods he uses. Ps. Also good for parents with small children. Many of the same principles apply.
Good Information for New Dog Owners August 31, 2008 ?danielle. (New Jersey) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My husband and I are becoming puppy parents in a few weeks, I've worked with dogs before, he hasn't. I was looking for a book that would have some practical advice on how to prepare for our pups arrival and how to train our puppy to grow into a well behaved adult dog. This book offers practical, common sense advice and also gives some tips that one would only get from a professional trainer. The book is repetitive at times, but I believe that is done to help drive home a point. It is organized into very helpful chapters that align with the developmental stages of your puppy and is focused as much on training dog owners as it is on training dogs. The "deadlines" provided are really guidelines and let you as an owner know what the critical points are in training a dog, but just like kids, all puppies are different, so you need to do what works for your dog. I've already marked important pages and anticipate looking back to this book often as I work with my new pup!
Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog June 13, 2008 J. Smith 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A must read for anyone considering getting a new puppy. The best book I've read on selecting, caring and training a puppy. The housetraining instructions were especially helpful and my 11 week old puppy is doing beautifully and is even letting me know when she needs to go outside.
